Dr. Vignesh Raja

Dr. Vignesh Raja is a highly experienced ophthalmic surgeon who has done extensive training in Ophthalmology across India, United Kingdom and Australia. Dr. Raja was the head of department of Ophthalmology at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital from 2014 to 2023.

After completing his primary medical degree (MBBS) in India, Dr. Raja embarked on the 3-year Master of Surgery-Ophthalmology program at the world’s largest eye care system – the Aravind Eye ospital and Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology from 2001-2004. He then moved to the UK to pursue further specialist registrar training in Ophthalmology at The Royal Liverpool University Hospital and The Oxford Eye Hospital from 2004-2012, with fellowships in glaucoma and vitreo-retinal surgery.

Dr. Raja did his advanced sub-speciality training in vitreo-retinal surgery at the world renowned Oxford Eye Hospital under Dr. CK Patel, Dr. Paul Rosen and Professor. Robert Maclaren. He then moved to Perth, Australia in 2013 to complete his second fellowship in medical and surgical retina with Professor. Ian Constable at SCGH and at the Lions Eye Institute, Perth.

Dr. Raja was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Head of Department of Ophthalmology at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in 2014 to 2023. He has been awarded as “Trainer of Excellence” in Western Australia by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists on multiple occasions. Dr. Raja has recently been appointed as a Visiting Faculty Professor at Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai, India.

Dr. Raja actively participates in teaching and training of registrars and medical students and clinical research. He has presented his research at numerous international meetings. He has co-authored the text book “ Constable & Lim Colour Atlas of Ophthalmology and chapters in Ophthalmology textbooks.

Dr. Raja has a special interest in complex cataract surgery, glaucoma and medical & surgical retina. Dr. Raja offers treatments for cataract, glaucoma, medical retinal diseases – macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases and surgical retinal conditions – epiretinal membranes, macular hole, persistent floaters, diabetic vitreous haemorrhage and retinal detachment. He offers surgery for uninsured and private patients across the following hospitals – Joondalup Health Campus, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Osborne Park Hospital, Sundew Day Surgery, Perth Eye Hospital and Lions Eye Institute.

Dr. Pav Gounder

Dr. Gounder was appointed as the Head of Department of Ophthalmology at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in 2023.

Dr. Gounder is an international award winning ophthalmologist who was raised and trained in Perth. After completing his ophthalmic surgical training in Western Australia, he spent 17 months in Herefordshire and Wales, UK for his first fellowship with a focus on cataract and oculoplastic surgery. His second fellowship was a further 15 months in Brighton, England where his focus included eyelid, endoscopic lacrimal and orbital surgery. Whilst in the United Kingdom, Dr Gounder was employed by NHS Trusts for cataract waitlist reduction, supervised trainees as a Royal College of Ophthalmology Assessor and co-wrote the eyelid, lacrimal and orbit chapters of the upcoming 5th edition of the Oxford Handbook Ophthalmology. Dr Gounder’s surgical videos have been featured on EyeSurgeryVideos.net and have won prizes at international ophthalmology society meetings.

Alongside working at Joondalup Eye Clinic, Dr Gounder works at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital where he teaches and trains the next generation of West Australian ophthalmologists. He has published widely in international peer reviewed journals on topics that include the use of technology in ophthalmology, eye infections, periocular cancers and ophthalmology training. He is a member of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, Australian Society of Ophthalmologists and the British Oculoplastic Surgery Society.

Dr Gounder offers treatments for cataract, glaucoma, oculoplastic surgery including lid malpositions, droopy eyelids, eyelid malignancies, lacrimal disorders and orbital diseases. He offers surgery for uninsured and private patients across the following hospitals – Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Osborne Park Hospital, Sundew Day Surgery and Perth Eye Hospital.

Outside of work, Dr Gounder enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, gardening and watching the mighty West Coast Eagles.

Dr. Irene Tan

Dr Irene Tan is an Australian-trained Specialist Ophthalmologist who has completed a prestigious international fellowship at the Guys’ and St Thomas’ Hospitals, London. She is a comprehensive ophthalmologist and cataract surgeon, who also specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and surgical management of glaucoma.

Dr Tan graduated in Medicine from the University of Western Australia with Honours, and was awarded the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmology Prize. She completed her specialist training at the Sydney Eye Hospital network.

This was followed by further advanced sub-specialist Fellowship training in glaucoma management and surgery at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, London, United Kingdom. She is highly skilled in medical and surgical management of cataract surgery and complex glaucoma. Her surgical expertise includes glaucoma filtration surgery (trabeculectomy), glaucoma drainage devices, minimally invasive glaucoma surgical techniques and all types of glaucoma laser procedures.

She is a locum Consultant Glaucoma Surgeon at the Royal Perth Hospital and is engaged in the ongoing training of ophthalmology registrar training and medical student teaching. She has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international ophthalmology conferences

Dr Tan values the working partnership between ophthalmology and primary eye care providers including optometrists and general practitioners, to ensure the highest standard of comprehensive care.

Dr. Maria Franchina

Dr Maria Franchina is a locally-trained paediatric and general adult ophthalmologist who completed her fellowship training at Perth Childrens’ Hospital. She has a special interest in strabismus surgery, the management of congenital and acquired childhood eye diseases and neuro-ophthalmology.

Dr Franchina completed her medical training at The University of Notre Dame, Fremantle and completed a Master of Medicine (Ophthalmic Science) through The University of Sydney. As a lecturer at the University of Notre Dame she is actively involved in ophthalmology teaching to medical students.

With a focus on improved patient outcomes through evidence-based practice, Dr Franchina has published extensively in the international peer-reviewed scientific literature, including in the areas of childhood eye injuries and strategies to prevent myopia progression.

Dr Franchina also holds appointments as a consultant ophthalmologist at Perth Childrens’ Hospital, Sir Charles Gardner Hospital and Fremantle Hospital.
